About this site
Welcome. Or as the Irish say, “You’re very welcome."
This is a place where I'll write essays, notes, journalism, poems, and, as Rilke said, "live the questions," especially those that won't leave me alone. Along the way, I'll occasionally share reporting and articles I've published elsewhere when they connect with the conversations we're having here.
Some pieces begin in the forest or when I’m riding my bike. Others begin in the newsroom, at the kitchen table, or in the quiet moments after loss. I write about grief, nature, travel, health, language, music, and the ordinary moments that reveal something larger. Mostly, I write about paying attention.
Why Opening the Trunk: A trunk can hold almost anything: treasures, keepsakes, stories, field notes, old photographs. They store the things we save because they matter, because we can’t face them, or because we aren't quite ready to let them go. It can travel with us or be passed from one generation to the next. To open one is an invitation to discover what's inside.
Tree trunks keep track of the seasons. An elephant explores the world with their trunk— curious, attentive, reaching toward what it finds.
